Why you need the Holy Ghost!

I wanted to share this little Bible study that my Pastor put together about why we need the Holy Ghost.

Why You Need The Holy Ghost
                      Pastor: Ivan Dowd
Heritage Apostolic Church-Glenallen, Missouri

Rom 8:9

9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his .

 Introduction:
It is a common belief today among the majority of religious people that receiving the baptism of the Holy Ghost was only for the 120 in the upper room on the day of Pentecost and is no longer available or necessary for us today . But according to the Bible it is absolutely essential and there is no salvation without the Holy Ghost. Lets take a look and see.

Ps 139:14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made:
  • First lets look at how we as humans are made from a very practical but biblical point of view.
  • We are all made three part beings  body- soul- spirit
1 Thess 5:23
23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • Let's look at the first man Adam in the garden.
Gen 2:7
7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
  • Notice there were three things God did here when he made Adam.
  1. Body---------------------from dust
  2. Spirit---------------------breath of life
  3. Soul----------------------living soul means eternal
  •  God told Adam in Gen. 2:17 that if he ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil he would surely die that day.

Gen 2:17
17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

We know that Adam did eat of the tree God said to leave alone.
                                           And Adam died !!!

How did he die? -------------------- The flesh didn’t die--he lived to be 930 years old.
The soul didn’t die ------------------We know the soul of man never dies.
So how did he die -------------------HE DIED  SPIRITUALLY.
1 Cor 15:22
22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
  • How did we die in Adam???
  • We all have fleshly bodies.
  • We all have souls.
  • We died spiritually in Adam.

Eph 2:1-2
2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
WE all became spiritually dead in Adam
What are the Functions of our three part being?
  1. The body--it is the house of the soul.
  2. The soul-- is eternal it's the prize.
  3. The spirit-- is the navigation system of the soul and body that leads us to God.
OUR FOCUS NOW IS ON THE SPIRIT
Rom 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
  • When a man is spiritually dead he makes a god out of himself or things he sees.
  • He is floundering for spiritual direction when he is spiritually dead.
John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth:
  • The spirit of truth is the Holy Ghost.
  • Or we could paraphrase and say "the Holy Ghost will guide you into all truth.
1 Cor 2:10-12
10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

  • So if we all died in Adam how are we made alive in Christ?
  • The answer is found in John 3: 3-8.
  • Its called the new birth.
John 3:3-8
3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again , he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again .
8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
NOTE: Jesus said the evidence of those born of the spirit was a sound --not a feeling.
  • The wind is always symbolic of the spirit of God in the bible.
  • Jesus didn’t say you feel the wind but you hear it ----sound.
  • Lets go to the book of acts and see how the new birth happened
  • Until the day of Pentecost they were spiritually dead--

2 Cor 3:6 for the letter (law) killeth , but the spirit giveth life.
Acts 2:1-4
2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
NOTE: speaking with other tongues was the (sound) evidence of the spirit
John 20:22
22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:
  • Jesus here in John 20:22 is nearly repeating what God did in Gen. 2:7
  • Where was this first account of the new birth experience?
  • In the upper room on the day of Pentecost.

  • This was the first outpouring of the spirit
Acts 2:15-17
15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.
16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
  • This was a prophesy fulfilled.
Acts 2:36-39

36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
  • What happened to them here?
  • They were born again of water and spirit.
Rom 8:9-10

9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you.
Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his .
10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
The new birth is the same as being filled with the Holy Ghost.
WHAT IS THE HOLY GHOST ?--Is it the third person in the trinity ?
No there is no trinity in the bible.
The word trinity is nowhere in the bible.
God and man is a trichotomy not a trinity.
A trichotomy is one divided into three distinct parts.
A trinity is a group of three.
                                        God is one.
1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
Deut 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:
Isa 45:5 I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me:
  •  we were made in his likeness and image
Gen 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness :
  • We are BODY--SOUL--SPIRIT.
  • God is not three persons but is like us BODY--SOUL--SPIRIT.
  • The Father is the SOUL or that eternal God That is without beginning or end.
  • The Word is the son or the BODY.
  • The Holy Ghost is Gods --SPIRIT. (John 14:16-17 ;26
John 1:14
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

  • So if we are made like God three part beings Body -Soul- Spirit does that make us a trinity?
  • No when you’ve seen me you’ve seen the Father-Son -spirit  (John 14:9)
Rom 8:14-16
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of  adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
So what happens when you die ?
  1. Where Does the Body Go?
Gen 3:19

19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

  1. Where Does the Spirit Go?
Eccl 12:7

7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it .

  1. Where Does the Soul Go?
  • There are two schools of thought on where your soul goes when you die.
  1. The one is that you immediately go to heaven to be with Jesus.
  2. The other is that the soul goes to a place of rest or sleep to await the resurrection.
  • There may be some difference of opinion about this as far as where your soul goes if you are ready when you die but there is no question about where your soul goes immediately when you die without being born again.
  • Jesus gave us an account of two men who died and what happened beyond the grave.
  • This story is a window through the grave.
Luke 16:22-23

22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
  • In the story of these two men we are shown a picture of the destination of the souls of the good and the bad.
Matt 10:28
28 And fear not them which kill the body , but are not able to kill the soul : but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
  •  I personally believe that when we die in the Lord we are in a place of sleep in the presence of the lord waiting that last trump and the new body
1 Cor 15:51-52

51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep , but we shall all be changed,
52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
  •  But whether we go to a place of sleep and wait the resurrection of the dead or go straight to heaven it is clear we will not go to either without the infilling of the holy ghost
  • And if we die without the spirit of God we KNOW that the soul goes straight to hell
  • That’s why you need the Holy Ghost!!!!!!
1 John 5:7-8

7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.------ONE GOD

8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.-------SALVATION
  • There were three things that Jesus gave up on the cross-- water --spirit --blood
  • Those are the three ingredients to salvation
Acts 2:38

38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent = blood, and be baptized = water every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost = spirit.

Col 2:9-10
9 For in him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.
10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

Man is never complete until he is born again or filled with the Holy Ghost.
